Chris Walker-Bush

Chris Walker-Bush is a 28 year old Australian travel blogger, ESL teacher, and self-confessed geek. Aussie on the Road follows his travels around the world as well as his own personal journey of self improvement. On the site you’ll find tales of adventure and romance; teaching tips; bucket list pursuits; and even a little sex and heart-break.

You can work pretty much where you want to – on the road, do you find it hard to work or do you just have fun and work when you come back home?

I've found a way to avoid having to work 'at home' and I've been working as an ESL teacher to supplement my travels since 2007. I did three years in South Korea and have found my niche here in China - where I've got ample time to work on my blog as well as eight weeks paid vacation a year to get out and travel. I'm very lucky.

Do you feel many people are envious of your lifestyle?

I don't often think about it, but then a friend will comment on a Facebook post or they'll text me and I'll realize just how lucky I have it. My life isn't all five star resorts and dream destinations, but I've done more in the past five years than many people do in their entire lives. Every time I'm reminded of how good I have it, I feel humbled.

In which countries have people recognised you, even when you thought nobody would?

I can't say that I've had people recognize me while traveling - my site is nowhere near big enough that I've built a following big enough that I'd have a statistical chance of even meeting one of them. Unless Travel Massive meetings count. I've been 'recognized' at a few of them back in Sydney.

Which three items would you never travel without?

My iPhone, my Kindle, and my camera. The three of them keep me entertained, connected, and able to produce content even when I don't have a laptop on hand.

Are there any specific souvenirs or other things you collect from the places you go to?

I've recently started picking up post cards that I can send back to my 1 year old nephew in Australia. It's unlikely he'll get the chance to travel much any time soon and I don't see him often, so I thought it would be a nice little keepsake for him to have.
