Dawn Jorgensen

Travel Writer. Beauty Seeker. Earth Advocate.

With more than a decade’s experience designing dream holidays and taking many myself, as The Incidental Tourist I ventured into travel writing and photography, allowing the opportunity to share these experiences with others. Based between Cape Town and a small farm in Wellington, I enjoy both local and international travel. Always with a trip in my future to look forward to.

My focus is held by the creatures of the earth, specifically those water based. I write restaurant and accommodation reviews, campaign for causes I believe in, and live my life with an enormous amount of gratitude.

In my spare time its long walks with my dogs, fencing and yoga. I love full moons and big skies. Music and art. The ocean and the bush. And believe that we all deserve true happiness. Also that travel really matters.

You can work pretty much where you want to – on the road, do you find it hard to work or do you just have fun and work when you come back home?

A bit of both. Whilst I'm on the road I enjoy sharing my experience in real time on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with perhaps one or two blog posts, doing the rest once I am back. This works well and gives the trip longevity. ie. A build up. In the moment. Then blogging and sharing in more detail.

Do you feel many people are envious of your lifestyle?

Yes but only because they are looking at it superficially. Not at what it actually involves, the hard work, long hours, money and time away from home. There is much that is wonderful about being a travel writer. But nothing comes for nothing.

In which countries have people recognised you, even when you thought nobody would?

Only in South Africa.

Which three items would you never travel without?

My Camera. Mac. iPhone. (and off the record - chocolate).

Are there any specific souvenirs or other things you collect from the places you go to?

Always a fridge magnet to add to my collection. But more than that I often buy a bracelet or band. Books or guides of the places I visit. And coffee! I love the different coffee, spices, etc on offer at the market. I just can't resist.
