Jeff Bergemann

I quit my secure, decently paying office job in search of something more interesting. Now after a year of working in Korea, my girlfriend and I are about to set off around the world. My travel decisions are largely influenced by food so I’ll be stopping at the most delicious sounding countries. I’ll spend an entire day traveling to a particular restaurant I heard good things about. Why not spend a whole year?

You can work pretty much where you want to – on the road, do you find it hard to work or do you just have fun and work when you come back home?

I work when I can. Working in a different culture allows you to encounter interesting aspects of a culture that you otherwise never would have.

Do you feel many people are envious of your lifestyle?

Sometimes I'll be talking to someone and they'll say something like, "Jeff, I'm so envious of your lifestyle". From conversations like these, I suspect that at least some people are envious of my lifestyle.

In which countries have people recognised you, even when you thought nobody would?

The first time this ever happened I was visiting my favorite Mexican restaurant in Incheon, South Korea and the owner recognized me from the review I wrote on my blog! It was really exciting.

Which three items would you never travel without?

Long-term: Laptop (need internet), camera (need memories), e-reader (need a way to waste time). Day Outing: Compass (I looked up a map earlier, what direction do I walk?), plastic bag (keep a couple things dry if necessary), small snack (for when a meal isn't right around the corner).

Are there any specific souvenirs or other things you collect from the places you go to?

I try to keep the programs of any theater shows I go to, though with the budget travel I do these days, it doesn't really come up all that often.
