Kae Lani Kennedy
Kae Lani Kennedy is a freelance travel writer based out of Philadelphia (for now). A self proclaimed Renaissance woman, she funds her vagrant lifestyle through a myriad of skills and trades that she’s picked up over the years.
You can work pretty much where you want to – on the road, do you find it hard to work or do you just have fun and work when you come back home?
When I'm traveling I concentrate on having fun while taking as many notes and pictures as possible. By the end of my journey I have notes scribbled on napkins, pictures of information signs, a notebook full of sentence fragments and even voice recordings on my iPhone (memo to self...). I don't put everything together until I'm at home or in transit again. Come to think of it, I write best when I'm in a plane, train or automobile!
Do you feel many people are envious of your lifestyle?
I think most people are impressed and they're always very curious. They always ask things like "where's your favorite destination" or "what's the craziest thing that's happened to you on a trip". My favorite is engaging them in the conversation and having them tell me their stories.
In which countries have people recognised you, even when you thought nobody would?
Germany and once when I was in an airport in London a blog fan spotted me. I've also had fans from my home town of Philadelphia stop me in the airport for a chat and pictures and I had one run-in while traveling in Boston.
Which three items would you never travel without?
1: My leather notebook
2: My Nikon D-40
3: First Aid Kit
Are there any specific souvenirs or other things you collect from the places you go to?
I like to collect shot glasses and mugs! I also go crazy over postcards - I treat them like they're Pokemon cards and I'm trying to catch all of the destinations!
